The Chemical Industry Vision2020 Technology Partnership (Vision2020) and the Council for Chemical Research (CCR) are organizing a second open U.S. Chemical Industry Workshop to Identify Research Collaborations on April 12-13, 2005 as part of CCR's Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. Technical experts and R&D managers are invited to join this one-day workshop to develop new R&D partnerships. Participants will learn about funding opportunities, present R&D project ideas, identify projects of interest, and hold informal discussions to discover the potential for collaborative partnerships.

Workshop Purpose: Identify new funding sources and collaborators for research that will benefit the U.S Chemical Industry

Topics Covered: This workshop will focus on the five topic areas listed below. The Session Chairs are also listed:

Topics and Funding Agencies:

  • Fundamental Science to Impact Biomedical Research – National Institutes of Health (NIH), General Medical Sciences
  • Sensors for Homeland Security – Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
  • Materials Science and Sensors – National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • Fuels and Chemicals from Non-Conventional Hydrocarbon Sources – Department of Energy/National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL) and the DOE/Industrial Technology Program (DOE/ITP)
  • Applied Computational Tools, CFD, Integrated Flow Sheet, Simulation of Flow Sheets – DOE/NETL
  • Materials for Energy Opportunities (ceramics, alloys, membranes, nanotubes, etc.) – DOE/NETL
  • Catalysts and Catalysis – DOE Basic Energy Sciences and NSF

Who Should Attend: Research scientists and R&D managers from chemical companies, government R&D programs, National Laboratories, and universities.

Scope of Workshop: For each topic area, a representative from one of the funding agencies will present opportunities. Next, participants will present project ideas within the topic area on which they would like to collaborate with others. For each project, interest among chemical company, government, and university researchers will be identified. Self-selected "matching" of interests will be matrixed. Participants will use this information to identify partners with common interests. Potential partners will have time to scope out the project in greater detail to determine the feasibility of a R&D collaboration. The goal is to help all participants from collaborations in areas of their interest.

Expected Outcome: Formulation of R&D partnerships that will continue to work together and respond to Federal Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
