Current Activities

The Vision2020 Steering Committee plans, coordinates, prioritizes, and initiates activities for the benefit of all stakeholders - industry, academia, and the public. Activities are pursued by industry champions with common interests in specific technology areas. Vision2020 Subcommittees lead and coordinate these activities and report progress and results to the Vision2020 Steering Committee. All chemical companies are eligible and encouraged to participate in Subcommittee activities. Currently, there are three Vision2020 Subcommittees:
Technology Subcommittee
Vision2020 is actively seeking additional participants. Join an activity underway or form a subcommittee in a new technology area. For more information on the Vision2020 Subcommittees, contact

The purpose of Vision2020 Technology Subcommittee is to establish R&D collaborations in pre-competitive areas that will result in widespread implementation of continuous improvement and/or breakthrough technologies (hardware or software) to help chemical companies enhance their competitiveness and meet societal needs. Subcommittee members identify technical areas for R&D collaborations in pre-competitive areas defined by company interests and recruit program champions, facilitate formation of teams and help the teams make progress.
Activities are underway in the following technology focus areas:
Activities in the following technology focus areas are being considered:
- Water purification and reuse
- Alternative Fossil-Based Feedstocks and Chemicals
- Energy Efficient Process Alternatives
- Alternative solvents and elimination of solvents
- Crosscutting Capabilities
- Catalytic process technology
- Reaction engineering
Chemicals Plus Subcommittee
The Chemicals Plus Subcommittee is helping to establish Chemicals Plus to help chemical companies access the unique capabilities of U.S. National Laboratories, universities, research institutes, and other facilities. By building research networks, Chemicals Plus is helping solve research challenges in the chemical industry. Progressive, leading-edge companies are already participating.
Chemicals Plus:
- Supports scoping studies to facilitate development of collaborative research projects
- Assists in the formation of pre-competitive research collaborations
- Fosters R&D in pre-competitive areas identified by Vision2020 and/or chemical industry roadmaps
- Focuses on continuous improvement and/or breakthrough technologies
- Provides technical assistance to small-and medium-sized chemical companies
Vision2020's Chemicals Plus is expanding the technical and financial resources available to the U.S. chemical industry. With support from the Office of Industrial Technologies in the U.S. Department of Energy, Chemicals Plus is helping to fund studies and other projects that will lead to technology innovation and broad benefits for the chemical industry. Chemicals Plus is making it easier for chemical companies to leverage their internal R&D resources though improved access to experts in the DOE National Laboratories and other facilities.
Eligibility:
- Projects must support Vision2020 goals
- Projects are proposed by industrial teams consisting of two or more chemical companies, including a Vision2020 Steering Committee member
- Projects are performed by DOE National Laboratories with support from qualified research institutions, universities, and/or commercial subcontractors
- Projects are awarded up to $75K over a maximum of 12 months
- When industrial funding is involved, intellectual property agreements can be negotiated
- Projects fully funded by DOE are non-proprietary

Vision2020 Challenge Subcommittee
Vision2020 is considering launching an industry R&D competition to develop innovative high-priority technology applicable to a broad segment of the chemical industry. By offering financial incentives for breakthrough technology development, the Chemical Vision2020 Challenge would advance energy-consuming process technology and make it available to the entire chemical industry. The Subcommittee is currently considering topics and funding strategies.
